NU starts UAAP 77 chess with a bang

National University dominated Day 1 of the UAAP Season 77 Chess Tournament for both Men’s and Women’s Chess at the Henry Sy Building in De La Salle University this January 10, 2015.

Men’s Chess

NU recorded a 3-1 triumph over Ateneo. NU’s  Caneda and Mansanero recorded wins, while Literatus and Fuerte were tied with Garcia and Yao, respectively.

DLSU clobbered FEU, 2.5-1.5, through the collective efforts of their prized recruits Jerad Docena and Giovanni Mejia. DLSU team captain Oberio and Graspella were tied at Board 4 after several hours of play, while FEU’s MIrano was the lone victor for the Morayta-based squad against Grafil.

The Adamson-UST tussle proved to be the highlight game of the day as the matchup recorded three ties on four board matches. AdU’s Labog erased the deadlock with a win over UST’s Dacanay to give his team with a 2.5-1.5 win.

UP and UE were tied at 2 apiece after Day 1 with identical performances: 1 win, 1 loss, and 2 ties.

Women’s Chess

NU stole the spotlight of Women’s Chess from four-time champion DLSU with a masterful 4-0 win against UE. The team of Bonifacio, Bermundo, Regencia and Reyes proved to be too much for UE and its lady woodpushers.

Though NU was atop the standings after Day 1, FEU had the upset of the day as they won against the defending champions DLSU, 2.5-1.5. Reigning MVP Jodilyn Fronda and Bernadette Galas of DLSU surprisingly yielded to their FEU counterparts, Frayna and Romero in Board 1 and 3, respectively.

UST got the better of UP, 2.5-1.5, scoring wins from Michella Goncio from Board 2 and Guico from Board 4. UP, on the other hand, took Board 1 through Bernales.

Ateneo and Adamson also ended Day 1 with similar records of 2-2 (2 wins and 2 losses)

Day 1 in the books

Though the first day of intense collegiate chess action was over, this season is expected to be one of the best and closest finishes in recent years. A lot of teams obviously got better and have levelled the battlefield, but expect powerhouses UP, DLSU and FEU to be at their best day in and day out.

UAAP Chess action resumes on January 11 at the same venue.
