NU delivers UST’s first defeat, remains undefeated

With both UST and NU remaining unscathed after their respective first weekend battle, January 24 marked the first time the two giant tennis teams of the UAAP face off. With both of them entering with 2-0 ratio, only one team could come out with an undefeated record and that was none other than incumbent champion National University who delivered an anticlimactic 4-1 victory against their counterpart from the España-based University of Santo Tomas.

Starting the Recto-based National University’s assault in the singles category was Dheo Talatayod who easily dispatched UST’s Francis Lanzado in a one sided match which ended 6-2, 6-0. His success were soon followed by comrades Fritz Verdad and Leander Lazaro who both defeats their assignment Hakeem Cariga and Francisco Santos in an identical and one sided match of 6-2, 6-2 respectively.

The assault continued on in the doubles category as the National University duo of Michael Madrio and Jigo Peña also deliver a one sided and a double 6-2 match finish against University of Santo Tomas’ Joel Cabusas and Francis Patiño.

Breaking the nonstop string of match victories encountered by NU for the day from both the men’s and women’s division of the UAAP Tennis Championship was the sibling duo of Bernanlou Bering and Bernlou Bering who successfully defeated their National University counterparts John Accion and Francis Alcantara in a 6-2, 7-5 victory for UST.

The defeat suffered by UST against NU places them at 2nd while the National University along with UP are the only teams to still remain undefeated as of January 24.
