Following the close match of UAAP Season 77 Tennis openers La Salle and UST, the squads of both NU and UE took to the clay courts to find out which of the two Sampaloc-based universities is a cut above the other.
Out to defend their hard-fought title from last year, incumbent champions National University proved to be far too much for the University of the East as they blasted to a spectacular 4-1 finish.
Leading the Bulldog’s charge to victory was Fritz Verdad who quickly dispatched UE’s Rogelio Estaño in a 6-1, 6-1 finish only to be followed by Leander Lazaro who also defeated Joshua Kinaadman in a 6-1, 6-0 match. NU’s singles breeze however ended when Deheo Talatayod was consistently challenged by UE’s Rodolfo Baequin. Regardless of the challenge, NU still came out on top with an exciting three round finish of 6-1, 3-6, 7-6.
Olo and Soriano gave UE its lone win with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over the tandem of Accion and Dolorito, but NU duo Peña and Madrio took care of UE’s Saga and Amazona in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
