NLEX hosts Asi Taulava’s jersey retirement ceremony

NLEX announced the retirement of Asi Taulava’s jersey no. 88, marking the culmination of a remarkable basketball career.

The much-anticipated ceremony is set to unfold during the halftime break of the Road Warriors’ clash against the TNT Tropang Giga on Wednesday, December 13, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Taulava, a towering presence in both height and Philippine basketball history, is slated to receive honors for his illustrious career that spanned over two decades.

The journey of the 6-foot-9 Fil-Tongan basketball legend began in 1998 as a direct hire by Mobiline.

Taulava left an indelible mark on the sport, leading Talk N Text to the 2003 PBA All-Filipino title and earning the Most Valuable Player award in the same year—a testament to his on-court prowess and leadership.

Taulava’s basketball odyssey traversed various teams, including notable stints with Coca-Cola, Meralco, and Air 21, ultimately culminating in an impactful eight-year tenure with the Road Warriors.

His contributions extended beyond the court, leaving behind a lasting legacy of sportsmanship and dedication.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Asi Taulava racked up an impressive array of accolades, standing as a beacon of excellence in Philippine basketball.

A 17-time All-Star, four-time Mythical Team member, four-time second Mythical Team member, 2014 Comeback Player of the Year, and two-time scoring champion, Taulava consistently showcased his basketball prowess.

Taulava’s commitment to the sport also extended to the national team, where he proudly represented the Philippines for numerous years, solidifying his status as one of the country’s basketball icons.
