Nico Almendras delivered a stellar performance just in time for the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference semifinals, capping off the elimination round with his best game of the tournament last Sunday.
Almendras spearheaded the King Crunchers’ straight-sets victory over fellow semifinalists Savouge, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.
The win marked their sixth consecutive triumph and solidified their position at the top of the standings heading into the next phase.
The former National University standout had only averaged 8.25 points in Criss Cross’ first eight matches.
But he exploded for a tournament-high 19 points, registering 15 attacks, three kill blocks, and one service ace.
Joining Criss Cross after a decorated collegiate career with the National University Bulldogs, Almendras initially struggled to find his footing with the King Crunchers.
Moreover, the team was still reeling from a tough Finals loss to Cignal in the Open Conference.
However, his breakthrough performance signals perfect timing for the team as they chase a second straight finals appearance in only their second conference.
The King Crunchers now face a grueling semifinals round-robin format, with formidable opponents including the HD Spikers, FEU-DN Steel, Savouge, and KondohGumi Hyogo, a guest team from Japan.
Their semifinal campaign kicks off against the Ultras on Wednesday at 4:00 PM at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
As Almendras rises to the challenge, his focus remains firmly on preparation and execution.
With Almendras hitting his stride and the King Crunchers riding a wave of momentum, all eyes are on them as they strive to finally break through and clinch the championship.
