Nesthy Petecio punched her ticket into the Round of 16, starting off her redemption road in motion, with a unanimous decision win (5-0) over India’s Jaismine in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 Boxing women’s 57 kg category.
Petecio, who has made it known that this could be her last shot at the Olympics, showed up when she stepped into the ring at the North Paris Arena early Wednesday morning (Philippine time).
Using her quickness to counter the Indian’s height advantage, the former World champion Filipino connected with several punches and took the first round on four of the five judges’ scorecards.
Petecio continued to control the tempo in the second round, effectively blocking her opponent’s shots. Jaismine’s missed opportunities in this round proved crucial.
The third round was all but a formality for Petecio. She opened with a good combination, while Jaismine continued to miss against Petecio’s solid defense.
The 32-year-old Philippine flag-bearer emerged victorious as expected and advanced to the next round.
Next up for Petecio is hometown favorite Amina Zidani in the Round of 16, scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at 2:00 AM (Philippine time).
