Nesthy Petecio booked her place into the next round after a dominant performance against Congo’s Marcelat Sakobi Matshu, 5-0, in the Round of 32 match in the women’s featherweight class of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Boxing Tournament at the Kokugikan Arena, Saturday morning.
Four of the five judges scored the bout, all in Petecio’s favor, 30-27, with the other scoring it 29-28.
The 2019 World champion got the nod of all the judges in the last two rounds to take the win against the Congolese to ensure her progression.
Sakobi Matshu started the contest aggressively, but could not sustain her momentum throughout the first round. One judge scored the round in her favor, but the four others saw the Filipino had more punches that connected and gave the latter the round.
In the end, the 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist just went into the next rounds more composed and took the next two rounds convincingly.
Petecio will next face the number 1 ranked Chinese Taipei boxer Lin Yu-Ting in the Round of 16, which is scheduled on Monday, July 26 at 12:39 p.m.
