The Mapua University Cardinals had to scrape past the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21, and registered their second consecutive win, Monday morning at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
The Intramuros-based squad scattered an uncharacteristic 37 errors that cost them the leads and the third set. Nonetheless, it was the timely hits from captain Anjo Pertierra and senior Sam Damian that carried the Cards to the win.
“Ang maganda kahit nag-error kami, na-saside out agad namin,” the captain shared. “Buti na lang na-side out namin na di lalayo yung kalaban.”
Pertierra finished with 12 points, four coming off blocks. However, Mark Jason Egan topbilled Mapua with 19 markers off 16 attacks and three blocks, including the win-clinching rejection.
The Cards (2-1) will try to do better as they attempt to get past the San Beda College (1-1) on Thursday.
“We’ll try our best pa rin sa practices para prepared. We’re going to correct our errors,” Pertierra said of the match.
Jhonel Badua paced Lyceum with 21 markers.
The Pirates (0-3) will battle Colegio de San Juan de Letran (0-3) on Tuesday.
