NCAA 98: Rey Barcuma on point as Perpetual routs JRU for win no. 1


University of Perpetual Help System DALTA had an impressive season debut after demolishing Jose Rizal University, 84-60, in the 98th season of the NCAA men’s basketball on Sunday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Rey Barcuma could not miss in the contest, scoring 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field.

“I challenged my guys. Sabi ko pakilala tayo ngayon. Kumbaga pakita natin kung ano meron sa Perpetual Altas,” said Perpetual head coach Myk Saguiguit.

“Sana ganyan lagi para maging competitive kami ngayong 98,” he added.

Perpetual was actually down by 12 in the first quarter and was able to be back at the end of the half, gaining a one-point advantage.

From there, the Altas did not look back as it boosted their lead to as much as 26, 84-58, following a Marcus Nitura fastbreak in the fourth with a minute and 10 left.

Joining the scoring party for Perpetual were Jielo Razon and Mark Omega who both had 13 points. The former added seven boards and two assists while the latter had nine rebounds and a dime.

For JRU, Jonathan Medina led his team with 15 points, six rebounds, an assist, and two steals.

Perpetual will try to bring their firepower with them against Arellano University on Friday at 12 noon while JRU will look to bounce back against Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Wednesday at the same time.
