NCAA 98: Lyceum continues strong start, dumps JRU for 3-0 record


Lyceum of the Philippines University extended its winning streak in the NCAA Season 98 Women’s Volleyball Tournament with a 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 win over Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers, Sunday at San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

The Lady Pirates secured their third consecutive victory, remaining undefeated in the league with College of St. Benilde. On the other hand, the Lady Bombers are still winless with a 0-3 record.

After losing the first set, Lyceum’s head coach Cromwel Garcia told his team to return to their system. Garcia stated that their primary focus was to go back to their system and enjoy playing while doing it.

“Actually ang pinaka-main focus talaga namin is to go back dun sa system e. Kasi after nung laro namin ng Baste medyo nag-relax ng konti then short preparation talaga, so medyo struggling kami. Yung percent andun pa yung point na kinakampa namin kung ano motion na gagawin namin,” said Garcia.

“Sabi ko balik lang, enjoy lang kung ano ginagawa,” he continued.

Lyceum turned a two-point lead in the fourth set, 12-10, into a ten-point advantage, 21-11, thanks to Karyla Jasareno’s service error from the side of JRU.

Venice Puzon steered the Lady Pirates with 15 excellent sets and two points built on an attack and an ace. Meanwhile, Joan Doguna added 19 markers from 16 attacks and three serves.

Mary Ruiz of the Lady Bombers had 12 points off of ten attacks and two blocks.

In the other game, Mapua University defeated struggling San Sebastian College-Recoletos in a five-set 24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 15-12 victory.

In the final set, the Lady Cardinals took control, leading by as much as six, 14-8, after a service error from the Lady Stags. Despite their best efforts, the Lady Stags failed to close the gap, and Nicole Ong closed the game at 15-12 with a spike.

Kristine Dionisio finished with 26 points, 25 of them coming from attacks. Kamille Tan and Katherine Santos had 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Hannah De Guzman led the Lady Stags with 20 points, built from 19 attacks and a block, while Vanessa Basas had 15 excellent receptions.

With the win, Mapua improved to 2-1, while San Sebastian dropped to 0-3.
