In their first encounter since NCAA Season 95 Finals, San Beda-Taytay dominated Lyceum-Cavite after a 94-74 victory in the NCAA Season 98 Juniors Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at Emilio Aguinaldo Gymnasium.
Barrel-chested big man Christopher Hubilla led the demolition crew with 29 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
John Lopez and Andrei Dungo chipped in 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Red Cubs.
It was a total annihilation right from the get-go as the Red Cubs were already holding a 28-11 advantage.
The lead ballooned by as much as 37 following a triple from Gab Ludovice right at 2:13 in the third, 79-42.
The Junior Pirates were not able to recover as San Beda secured their first win of the season.
“Happy kami kasi andun kami defensively. Offensively, nung una, first half medyo andun kami. We’re distributing the ball we’re looking for the open man. Second half medyo nagkanya-kanya na so yun yung kailangan naming baguhin going to the next game,” said first year Red Cubs head coach Miko Roldan.
Matthew Rubico produced a line of 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal for the Junior Pirates.
Jose Rizal University stomped Emilio Aguinaldo College-Immaculate Conception Academy on the latter’s home turf following a 70-58 win.
Paul Enal had a monster performance for the Light Bombers with 12 points, 20 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
“Nagkaroon kami ng advantage dun sa bigs, so ang instructions ko sa kanila dun sa timeout feed natin yung big, kasi medyo talagang niraratrat kami dun sa ibabaw eh, medyo talagang dinedepensahan yung ibabaw,” said Light Bombers head tactician Victorino Lazaro II.
“Luckily, nag contribute naman, nag respond naman yung bigs namin especially yung (Paul) Enal at tiyaka yung ibang bigs sa loob,” he continued.
JRU was in control almost the entire ball game. The lead even ballooned by as much as 13 after a Lee Marin bucket, 66-53 right at the middle mark of the fourth.
Zairose Mina led the Light Bombers in scoring with 13 points while Jhunehl Discutido and Marin added 12 points apiece.
Lance Dungo and Jafer Villanueva were the sole bright spots for the Brigadiers with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Villanueva also grabbed eight boards.
