NCAA 98: Abis takes over in OT as Perpetual shocks San Beda

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA stunned San Beda University, taking a tough 75-72 overtime triumph and avenging its first round blowout in the NCAA Season 98 Seniors Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

John Abis came alive scoring eight of his 21 points in overtime. He also finished with nine boards an assist, and a steal while shooting an efficient 75-percent from the field and went perfect in the charity stripe.

Mark Omega also had a monster performance in the rebounding department, grabbing 22 — most this season, while adding nine points and two blocks.

Down by two, 72-74 with 10 seconds left, Peter Alfaro swiped the ball away from Carlo Ferreras to give the Red Lions one last chance to steal the game away.

The ball went into the hands of Justine Sanchez as he launched a corner triple but missed.

Rey Barcuma grabbed the board and was fouled by Tony Ynot.

Barcuma split his free throws to get the 75-72 cushion before Abis stole the ball away coming off an inbound pass to deny San Beda a chance to take a last shot.

“Chinallenge ko yung mga players ko, sabi ko sa kanila last chance to play Beda. It’s been a long time na yung Perpetual nanalo sa Beda. Since Season 91,” said the Altas head coach Myk Saguiguit.

Tied at 63 apiece before entering the final two-minute mark of the fourth, Abis broke the tiebreaker after knocking down both his free throws.

Bahio answered back with a bucket to tie before Jeff Egan split his free throws to get the one-point advantage, 64-63 with 1:38 remaining.

Peter Alfaro made a crucial three-pointer to give them back the lead, 66-64, but was quickly tied by Ferreras to knot it at 66 right at the 1:10-mark.

Omega missed both his free throws with 55-ticks remaining before Alfaro airballed his game-winning three.

Ferreras scored 17 markers, eight boards, and two dimes for Perpetual.

Alfaro and Bahio both had 14 with the former adding five rebounds, four assists and a steal; while the latter finishing with 12 boards on 6-of-8 shooting.

Yukien Andrada also had a double-double of 13 markers and 10 boards.

The usuals for both teams struggled this game as Jielo Razon only scored four points on 1-for-15 shooting. James Kwekuteye on the other hand finished with five markers on 2-for17 from the field.

The Altas snapped their three-game losing skid, now 5-6, while the Red Lions got their fourth loss in nine games.
