Navy sends Baguio packing with straight-sets loss

Navy veteran Lilet Mabbayad dished out 12 points in just two sets of action as her Navy Lady Sailors dismantled the Baguio Summer Spikers in three sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-12 in both teams’ final match in the preliminary round of the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference at the Filoil Flying V Arena, San Juan City.

The Lady Sailors put together their match of the season as all of their players participated in just two sets of action apiece, en route to thrashing the listless Summer Spikers. Navy’s Charmine Dela Cruz paced Navy with nine points while Norie Diaz, Carissa Martinez, and Pauline Genido each contributed six markers.

Baguio’s Krissian Tsuchiya ended her V-League season leading her team in scoring in each of Baguio’s matches as her 12 points topped all Summer Spikers, but none of her teammates produced more than five points.

Navy, now with a 3-4 record, needs Meralco to lose their last two matches to qualify for the top four that will move on to the next phase of elimination. Baguio finishes their season in seventh place with 1-6 slate with their only win coming against the last place Coast Guard.

Shakey’s V-League action will resume on May 10 after the AVC U23 tournament.
