Teytey Teodoro is one of the most clutch student-athletes in the NCAA today. From cold-blooded daggers to jaw-dropping ankle-breakers, the third-year gunslinger has dazzled to help lead the surging Jose Rizal to its third straight win.
Tuesday afternoon, the 22 year old gunslinger again dropped bombs against the Letran Knights, scoring eight points in the clutch to lift the Heavy Bombers to solo fifth in the NCAA Season 92 Seniors Basketball tournament. During that run of his, Teodoro utilized his uncanny dribbling to free himself up against Letran’s Rey Nambatac, an excellent one-on-one defender, and drain clutch jumpers.
His outstanding performance drew praise from none other than his head coach and PBA legend Vergel Meneses, even admitting that he is a fan of his.
“Fan tayo nito kaya nga nasa akin yan e,” Meneses said about Teodoro.
Teodoro, who is averaging a team-high 15.6 markers on 35.9 percent shooting from downtown, has one knack in his game according to the PBA’s Most Valuable Player back in 1995.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanya, ‘dumepensa ka, you’ll make it big. Maniwala ka sa akin.’ Pag nagawa niya yun, pupunta siya ng PBA ito sabi ko sa kanya,” the 47 year old mentor furthered.
Meneses, who has kept close with his connections in the big league, even shared that a lot of the coaches in the league are waiting for the JRU junior to graduate so that they can tap his services.
“From what I have heard, most of the coaches sa PBA ay fan niya but the problem is yung depensa,” he stressed.
“The effort was there but siguro more pa.”
Upon hearing this, Teodoro blushed a bit but emphasized that he is not thinking about it yet since there is still a mission at hand with the Kalentong-based squad.
“Focus muna ko sa JRU kasi gusto ko talagang pumasok sa championship. Matagal na masyado na hindi kami nakakapaglaro sa championship,” JRU’s leadining scorer said.
“Yun ang pangarap namin sa team kaya every game, one game at a time lang.”
Even if Teodoro has yet to be a defensive stopper, Meneses believes that his player will make it big one day since his passion for the game is undeniable.
“He can go the big league, yung puso niya nandun naman,” he closed.
