It looks like Atoy Co’s six-year term as head coach is over.
According to Co himself, the school has yet to renew his contract. But before that he already handed his resignation.
“Actually, nag-expire yung contract ko October 31, pero bago pa nun, nagbigay na ako ng courtesy resignation,” Co disclosed.
The development was first reported by ABS-CBN Sports.
After a dismal first two years to start his coaching career in his alma mater, Co was able to end the Cardinals’ four-year Final Four drought in Season 91. With the likes of two-time Most Valuable Player Allwell Oraeme, Josan Nimes, CJ Isit, Joseph Eriobu, and Andrew Estrella, Mapua were able to make the Final Four in back-to-back years.
However, disaster struck Co and the Cardinals, as Oraeme left Mapua.
It caused disarray, as the Cardinals have been at the lower echelon of the league for the past two years – including a 6-12 finish to Season 94.
Co had a tally of 40 wins and 72 losses in the last six years.
According to multiple sources, Mapua is looking at promoting Randy Alcantara to the seniors level, or tapping Adamson Jack Santiago as the team’s next head coach. Both are alumni of Mapua University.
For his part, Co is willing to become the team’s consultant to ease the process of transition.
