Lyceum of the Philippines University have dropped veteran guard Dexter Zamora from its roster in the 92nd NCAA basketball tournament unfolding this Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in San Juan City.
Robinson did not specify as to why Zamora, who had played in the pre-season Filoil Flying V Premier Cup a few weeks ago, was removed from the original lineup and cited only “disciplinary action.”
Instead, Paul Soliman and Mer Ayaay were named as the squad’s co-captains. “We’ve decided to go to our younger players and give them a chance,” said Robinson.
Zamora was supposed to lead the Pirates in their campaign after recovering from an ACL injury that caused him to miss the 91st season of the Grand Old League. He sustained the injury in a tune-up game in his hometown of Bohol during the summer of 2015.
Moreover, the Pirates will also miss big man Joseph Gabayni for more than a month after he figured in a motorcycle accident.
“He [Gabayni] will be out until August and we will have to rely more on the other players,” said Robinson. “We’re just thankful his injury is not serious.”
The Pirates face the EAC Generals this Sunday, June 26 at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
