Lyann De Guzman stays positive despite Nxled’s shock loss to Galeries

Lyann De Guzman refused to make excuses after Nxled suffered a shocking defeat to Galeries Tower in one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference on Thursday.

De Guzman admitted the Highrisers were simply the better team, while the Chameleons struggled with consistency and execution.

“Feel ko nagkulang lang kami sa ibang skills, ‘di namin siya napakita during game and nakita naman natin na Galeries really played good talaga. Grabe ‘yung performance nila today,” said De Guzman, the fourth overall pick in the 2025 PVL Rookie Draft, who was limited to just three points in the loss.

Three-time Conference MVP Brooke Van Sickle led Nxled with 21 points, and team captain Chiara Permentilla added 16 markers on 12 attacks and four aces. But beyond the duo, no other Nxled player reached double digits, as the rest of the squad struggled to find their rhythm against a staunch Galeries Tower defense.

De Guzman managed four points, while Myla Pablo contributed three, with the team also missing the services of star middle blocker MJ Phillips.

“It’s normal for athletes to have off days, and today wasn’t ours,” De Guzman said.

“Yun lang, feel ko talaga today is not our day, and sadyang all athletes naman hindi naman akyang every day, every game na mabibigay ‘yung one hundred percent niya. May tendency ‘yan na ngayong araw na ‘to, hindi talaga okay, but normal lang ‘yun as an athlete.”

Despite the setback, De Guzman found a silver lining, believing Nxled should face a loss early in the conference rather than falter during the crucial stages later on.

“Then ‘yun lang, feel ko at least maaga nangyari ‘yung ngayon, but opportunity din ‘to na kung ano pa ‘yung kailangan namin i-improve as a team and individually,” she said.

“Siyempre, nakakalungkot kasi we know na kaya rin naming lumaban and ‘yun nga, sadyang kinapos lang. Sabi nga namin, positive lang, tingnan lang kung ano ‘yung dapat i-improve ng team and individually, then we will start there kung ano ‘yung kailangan i-work on sa training.”
