During the opening day of the NCAA Season 95 Seniors Basketball Tournament, the Letran Knights were donning a different color. Instead of wearing blue and red jersey — or their red and blue colors on special games, the Knights were wearing white with blue trimmings and red font.
And it was due to the request of the NCAA.
“Ni-request ng NCAA,” said Letran’s athletic director Fr. Vic Calvo, OP.
Usually, when a team that has red as their dark jersey takes on Letran (i.e., Lyceum, San Beda, EAC, San Sebastian), the Knights, who have World Balance as its official outfittter, usually wears their blue uniforms to avoid confusion.
This time around though, the league wanted them to have a white jersey on stand-by.
“Pag kalaban mo ang Lyceum, naka-red. Pero pwede naman gamitin yung red pa rin,” Calvo disclosed after Letran’s 80-84 loss to Lyceum.
“Parehas pa yun. Ang objection nila, yung red daw hindi light. Pero ganoon na kami ever since, red ang light namin.”
The last time Letran had a white jersey in its cabinet was back in Season 88, the last season of Kevin Alas.
During that time, the Knights were able to stun Calvin Abueva and the second-seeded San Sebastian Golden Stags in the semifinals. However, the San Beda Red Lions defeated the Knights in three games in the finals.
Calvo though plans to bring back Letran’s red jersey if need be.
“Depende pa rin. Pag may pera, eh di bumili ng red.”
