The country bids farewell to a legend.
Antonio “Tony” Genato (June 9, 1929-November 22, 2023) passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 94.
Teresa Loyzaga, daughter of the late great Carlos Loyzaga, confirmed the passing.
Genato was also part of the Philippine team that competed in the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Summer Olympics.
The pint-sized guard began his basketball career at San Beda College, playing three seasons before going to University of Santo Tomas to pursue a degree in Medicine.
Genato joined the storied YCO Painters in 1952. The pint-sized guard decided to retire seven years later at the age of 30.
He then ventured into coaching, manning the sidelines of Great Taste during the team’s early years in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Genato was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday evening.
