The National University Lady Bulldogs secured their place in the women’s basketball Final Four after routing the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 67-50, to bring their streak to ten wins without a single loss.
The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tamaraws went neck and neck for most of the first half, with NU managing to escape with the 28-25 leads after an explosive second quarter that saw the two squads trade basket after basket.
NU’s Shelley Gupilan would draw first blood in the third quarter, hitting back-to-back three pointers in the opening minutes to NU up 34-25. The Lady Tamaraws would find themselves struggling to get their shots to fall in the next few minutes. A lay-up off the fastbreak by Afril Bernardino would put NU up by double digits for the first time in the game, 38-27, with five and half minutes remaining in the quarter. With FEU struggling to find the easy basket and NU finding their touch at the free-throw line, the Lady Bulldogs would take a 43-33 lead heading into the final period of the game.
The Lady Bulldogs however would only extend the lead to open the fourth quarter. With Afril Bernardino slashing open FEU’s defense and Shelley Gupilan, Trixie Antiquiera, and Janeth Sison finding their touch on the three-point line, the Lady Bulldogs would find themselves with a commanding 63-39 lead by the halfway point of the quarter. With time on their side, the Lady Bulldogs’ second-stringers would on the win, beating back a last minute rally by FEU.
Shelley Gupilan led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists, while Afril Bernardino had 14 points and 8 rebounds, along with 4 steals. April Siat and Angel Arellano had 10 points apiece to lead the Lady Tams.
