University of Santo Tomas suffered its third loss in 10 games this UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament on Tuesday.
But it was the first time the Golden Tigresses absorbed a straight-sets loss, bowing to Ateneo de Manila University, 20-25, 20-25, 20-25.
And for UST head coach Kung Fu Reyes, part of the defeat came from the bad calls of the referees.
“Hindi ko alam kung ano bang nangyayari. Very unusual sa dami ng bad calls, sa dami ng let go,” said the frustrated Reyes.
“Score na namin mapupunta pa sa kabila, so those things na na-be-break ‘yung momentum, well i-ilan, pero hindi dapat nangyayari kasi nga naglalabanan eh, pinaghihirapan namin ‘yung puntos, so very bad.”
But Reyes also admitted the problems his Golden Tigresses encountered in the match that lasted just 1 hour and 37 minutes,
One factor he was referring to was their errors, giving up 16 free points to the Blue Eagles.
“We just put it this way na bad game lang talaga. Kung titignan naman namin ‘yung score puro 20s e, so yung trend nung error doon na nga, doon namin nararamdaman pagdating sa dulo,” said the UST head coach.
“Deja vu nung third set, second set, supposedly momentum na kami pero ititigil dahil din sa unforced error namin, eh kung saka mo ibibilang ‘yung mga wrong calls medyo masakit na nararamdaman.”
But with the game finished and the result not in the Golden Tigresses’ favor, Reyes has just one plea to the officials.
“Trabaho nila yan, they must commit doon sa trabaho nila na maging matalas ‘yung mata and ‘yun ang pinakaimportante diyan puhunan diyan mata. Kami nga nakikita namin e. Yun di mo naman mai-challenge kasi paninidigan na nila yon.
“Siyempre babalikan namin ‘yung very crucial na tawag yun nga tama ang justification ni Magi na talagang lumabas sa antena na pinalo ni Gandler which is nakita naman nag sorry naman na mali pero yon tawag na nila yon, wala ka na magawa,” said Reyes, recalling one play during the game in which he said, Gandler’s attempt hit the antenna but was not called.
With UST still clinging to the second spot at 7-3, just half a game ahead of third seed De La Salle University at 6-3 with still a game later today, Reyes and his squad need to move on fast from this crushing defeat.
And Reyes surely knows his Golden Tigresses will be back in the win column in no time.
“Sabi nga hindi talaga para sa amin [ito]. Tinanggap naman namin ng maluwag yon, no more drama.
“Konting hilamos lang ulit and siyempre tiwala naman kami sa mga player namin na talagang babalik kasi alam namin ‘yung weaknesses nila at saka kung saan kami malakas,” he said.
