June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Abueva top candidates for BPC award


San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo and Alaska Milk’s Calvin Abueva are two of the strongest candidates for the Best Player of the Conference in the Philippine Cup.

In the latest tally released by the Philippine Basketball Association, Fajardo and Abueva are currently running first and second, respectively in the BPC derby.

The 6-foot-10 reigning Most Valuable Player currently leads the points and rebounds per game average. He averaged 18.5 points and 12.7 rebounds at the end of the elimination round. By carrying his team to the no. 1 spot at the end of the eliminations, Fajardo also garnered 41.2 statistical points to lead the race.

But Abueva is not far behind.

With his team Alaska still figuring prominently in the semifinals, leading its best-of-seven series against Rain or Shine, 1-0, Abueva is in strong running for the conference MVP award. He is second in the league in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.5 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. He has put up total SPs of 35.8.

Rounding out the top five for the BPC derby are Arwind Santos of San Miguel Beer (third, 33.0 SPs), Greg Slaughter of Ginebra (fourth, 32.8) and Alex Cabagnot of San Miguel (fifth, 31.7).
