Joyel feels fulfilled after heroic performance in beating Ceres-La Salle

Throughout the years, Filipino goalkeepers have shown great quality whenever they play. Followers of the national team, both old and young, have witnessed several standout goalkeepers who have represented the country in international tournaments.

By the looks of his performance last August 5, RJ Joyel has appeared to become one of the Philippines’ most promising goalkeeping prospects. The Manila Jeepney goalkeeper pulled out eight saves against an impressive, but perhaps unmotivated, Ceres-La Salle team, whom everyone knows clinched the United Football League (UFL) title over a week ago.

“Sobrang ganda kasi champion team, eh halos natalo namin. Malaking tulong ito,” Joyel cheerfully said after their end-of-the-season win. The secret to it was simple as the goalkeeper attributed the win to Master Kim Chul-Su’s smart football tactics. Throughout the second round, Manila Jeepney pocketed 11 points in eight games, six of which came against the top five teams.

However, their turbulent showing reflected in the standings, only finishing the league with 17 of the possible 51 points in the offing. A huge factor was the team’s inability to play their strongest team more often due to injuries. “‘Yung ibang player namin nagkakasakit kaya parang kulang-kulang kami every training. Mahirap na ibalik ‘yung tactics na tinuturo,” the goalkeeper narrated. They adjusted by maximizing their available roster in crafting plays which led to goals and, sometimes, wins.

The result surely bodes well for most Manila Jeepney FC players who are also members of the Far Eastern University men’s football team, such as Joyel. They are bound for Xiamen, China later this year to represent the country in the World University Football Cup. Mentored by Master Kim once more and playing alongside his collegiate teammates which include Global’s Paolo Bugas and Green Archers United’s Jhan Jhan Melliza, Joyel will eye not just to seek experience against opposition from around the world, but to make the Philippines proud as well. –LGT
