Joanie Delgaco got the Philippine Centennial Team’s Olympic Games Paris 2024 campaign underway with a fourth-place finish in the heats of the Women’s Singles Sculls, clocking in at 7:56.26 on Saturday at the Nautical Stadium in Île-de-France.
The first-time Olympian seemed poised for the quarterfinals halfway through the 2000-meter course, crossing the midpoint in third place with a time of 3:50.76.
But Slovenia’s Nina Kostanjsek slowly closed in on Delgaco by the 1200-meter mark before overtaking her and finishing with a time of 7:46.30.
Two-time world champion Karolien Florijn of the Netherlands and Switzerland’s Aurelia-Maxima Janzen secured the first two spots into the quarterfinals, with times of 7:36.90 and 7:42.15, respectively.
Delgaco will head into the repechage on Saturday, scheduled to start at 3:00 PM in this newly built stadium, in hopes of still making it to the last eight.
