University of Batangas outclassed rival school Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas, 102-83, and stayed unbeaten in five games in the PG Flex Linoleum-Universities and Colleges Basketball League yesterday at the Olivarez College gym in Parañaque City.
JJ Caspe and Harold de Guzman produced 26 and 22 points, respectively, for the UB Brahmans who broke away in the game only in the payoff period as they moved two wins away from sweeping the first round elims.
Protecting a 71-61 third quarter lead, the Brahmans – with Caspe joining forces with de Guzman and Joseph Torres – opened the payoff period with a murderous 12-0 run to rip the game wide open and take the sting out of the Pirates.
Caspe also posted 11 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and a block in a solid all-around game.
Meanwhile, defending champion Diliman College got off to a roaring start and clobbered National College of Business and Arts, 89-51, for its fourth straight win.
For the second straight game, Johnnel Rey Bauzon led the DC Blue Dragons with 22 points spiked by two as they handed the Wildcats their fifth straight defeat.
So dominant were the Blue Dragons they raced to a commanding 33-14 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play.
UB’s Melvin Ricaña flirted with a triple-double with 15 points, 11 boards, and eight assists while Raoul Yemeli hauled 13 rebounds on top of eight points.
With the defeat, Lyceum dropped to an even 2-2 card despite Aliane Lapasaran and John Weiland Villanueva scoring 20 and 21 points, respectively.
