Green Spikers’ coaching staff still has high hopes for team despite lackluster season

With a losing record so far, DLSU Green Spikers assistant coach Jose Roque still feels optimistic with regards to the team’s sub par performance in the continuing Men’s Volleyball tournament.

After notching only their second win in nine games via a four-set victory over the winless UE Red Warriors squad on Saturday, Roque shared his thoughts on the current team situation and his unwavering trust in the team.

“Hindi namin iniisip na magka winning streak. We take it game to game,” he stressed.

La Salle ended their first eight games with a 1-7 slate, their lone win also coming against UE. In the first round, three of the losses came from close five-set defeats that hurt their chances of a better record.

Roque, and the rest of the coaching staff of DLSU, did not hide the disappointment in losing grip late in those games. “Lamang na yun sa ibang games. Nawalan lang ng communication and teamwork talaga. Nawala din yung composure, sayang tuloy kasi lamang na.”

The team’s beach volleyball head coach also mentioned the importance of not being engrossed with winning streaks and taking each game set by set. In addition, he believes the team’s depth will help them eventually as a squad.

“Sabi naman namin sa kanila dapat andun lang yung skills and samahan every game. Ang okay sa team natin is that if may mawala, may pwedeng ihugot si coach na kayang magcontribute,” he added.

With five games left in the season, a chance for a seat in the Final Four becomes smaller as the tournament progresses, but La Salle is taking their chances even with the tiniest of hopes.

“Kaya pa naman yan (2-7 record). We never know what would happen sa ibang teams. Basta focus lang sa games natin,” Roque ended.

The Green Spikers will resume their Season 77 stint against FEU on February 1, 10am at the FilOil Arena.
