Veteran campaigners Ruben Gonzales and Treat Huey teamed up Saturday morning to win the doubles match against Chinese Taipei, 3-0, and extend their run at the 2015 Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group II second round action, at Kaohsiung Yangming Tennis Courts, Kaoshuing City, Taiwan.
The duo of Gonzales and Huey took the first set comfortably, 6-3, against the Taiwanese pair Hsien-Ying Peng and Hsin-Han Lee. The 2015 Southeast Asian Games standouts then experienced some resistance from the younger hosts, and forced them to two consecutive tiebreakers in the second and third sets, 7-6 7-6. The Filipinos pulled all stops and took the clinchers to keep the dream alive for the country.
With the victory, the Philippines restored their chance for promotion to Group I next year. Singles specialists Jeson Patrombon and Patrick John Tierro are scheduled to take the hard courts on Monday morning in the reverse singles. Patrombon faces top Taiwanese player, Yen-Hsun Lu; meanwhile, Tierro battles against Jui-Chen Hung. However, Team Captain Roland Kraut may change the nominations as allowed by tournament rules.
