As the dust settled on the Chess competition of the 2018 Para Asian Games, the Philippines came through with a huge haul in the tournament.
Two teams copped gold in the team event, while Fide Master Sander Severino won the Men’s Individual Standard P1 event, Wednesday morning at the Cempaka Putih in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Severino, 33, took home gold in the Men’s Individual Standard P1 with a 5.5 in the seven rounds of competition.
Besides this, Severino, who has Lou Gehrig’s disease, pocketed another gold in the Men’s Team Standard P1 competition with Henry Lopez and Jasper Rom with a total of 14.0
The B2/B3 squad of Redor Menandro, Arman Subaste, and Israel Peligro also brought home gold for their side with a total of 13.0.
Menandro finished with a silver in the Men’s Individual Standard VI – B2/B3 with a 5.0.
Rounding out the bronze medalists for the Chess Team are Jasper Rom (Men’s Individual Standard P1 – 5.0) and Arman Subaste (Men’s Individual Standard VI – B2/B3 – 4.5).
Team head coach James Infiesto is expecting more golds in the coming days as the Rapid Event commences.
“There are more to come,” Infiesto relayed to chef de mission Kiko Diaz. “My heart is overflowing with joy. Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!”
With this, the Philippines’ tally now stands at five golds, five silvers, and six bronzes.
