Gilas Women bow to Chanson to close Jones Cup run

Gilas Pilipinas Women could not play spoiler to Chanson, falling 95-88 to close out their 2023 William Jones Cup run on Wednesday at the Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei.

The Philippines ended its second-ever campaign in the yearly tournament with a 1-5 record — currently at fifth place.

Gilas’ sole win came on Day 2 of the tournament when they defeated Iran, 64-60.

The Filipinas lost to Chinese-Taipei’s seniors (85-89) and juniors squads (83-94) and Korea’s Busan BNK (59-65).

Behind Jack Animam, the Philippines was up 69-65 entering the final frame.

However, things fell apart in the last 10 minutes of the contest that saw the V-Magic take control.

Takano Hashikota torched Gilas with eight three-pointers for 32 points.

Koike Haruke dazzled as well with 14 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds while Kanaeda Mana and Izoje Uche chipped in 15 and 13 markers, respectively.

Chanson finished the tournament with a 5-0 record to run away with the title.

Jack Animam produced a double-double to pace Gilas, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Janine Pontejos added 20 points as well.
