Gilas Women achieve best finish in FIBA 3×3 W Series despite QF exit

Gilas Pilipinas Women bowed out of the 2024 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series – Wuhan Stop, absorbing a 19-16 defeat at the hands of Nations League-Asia 2 Conference winner China U23 on Sunday at Hubei Province Olympic Sports Center in China.

Still, this is the Philippines’ best finish in three stops in the W Series, placing fifth.

The previous best finish for Gilas Women was sixth in Ulaanbaatar.

Against China, Hazelle Yam and her teammates fought valiantly until crunch time, when Gilas found themselves in foul trouble.

Sun Fengyi delivered an and-one to give her side a 17-14 lead.

A couple more free throws by Sun seconds later sealed the deal for China U23, who will face China in the semis.

Yam led Gilas with seven points, followed by four points from Angel Surada.

Kaye Pingol and Sam Harada chipped in with three and two points, respectively.

Sun led the way for China with eight points, followed by seven from Hu Duoling.

Gilas Women, a team backed by Uratex, went 1-2 in the group phase, falling to Thailand 15-12, beating Chinese-Taipei 20-18, before being routed by China 21-13.

The Scores:

China U23 19 Sun 8, Hu 7, Wang XYu 3, Wang XYa 1.

Philippines 16 – Yam 7, Surada 4, Pingol 3, Harada 2.
