Gilas look to return to Calambubble in three weeks for FIBA Asia Cup prep

It’s next target now for Gilas Pilipinas.

After wrapping up its FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament campaign in Serbia, the Filipino dribblers are set to prepare for the 2021 Asia Cup in Indonesia.

Program director Tab Baldwin said that they have no exact dates yet, but the team could be back to training sometime between July 20 to 25.

“I would say somewhere around July 20th to the 25th, we’ll be back in the gym with the team,” he said Friday morning, moments after their 67-94 defeat to the Dominican Republic that ended their bid to qualify for the Tokyo Games.

It is also likely that Gilas will re-enter its training bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna for their practices, Baldwin added.

We don’t have the exact dates and we don’t know exactly what the protocol measures will be in the Philippines. But it looks like it will be back to the Calamba bubble for us at this point,” he said.

The youth-laden crew booked its place in the continental showpiece following an unscathed campaign in the qualifying stages, highlighted by an impressive 3-0 sweep of the third window in Pampanga just two weeks ago.

Just like in the second phase in Bahrain, the men’s team was composed of the young Cadets, although the crew that played in Clark had a major presence upfront with Kai Sotto and naturalized big Ange Kouame.

The team that scored huge victories over Korea were basically the same unit that went to Belgrade for the OQT, and the majority of which are expected to return for duty for the August 16 to 29 festivities in Jakarta.

The American-Kiwi bench tactician, however, said that the composition of the Asia Cup pool remains up for discussion.
