Gilas Pilipinas Men completed a sweep of Pool A in the 3×3 basketball tournament of the 20th Asian Games, beating Kazakhstan, 21-15, on Wednesday at the Kinjo Futo Station Square Venue in Japan.
The Philippines entered Wednesday’s game on the heels of two victories on Tuesday, defeating Asian No. 1 Mongolia, 19-12, before cruising past Sri Lanka, 21-12.
With three wins in as many outings, Gilas secured the top seed in Pool A and advanced to the quarterfinals with a perfect record.
Nic Cabañero spearheaded the Philippines’ offense against Kazakhstan with seven points, three rebounds, and an assist, while Doy Dungo added six points, three rebounds, and two assists.
Luis Pablo and Koji Buenaflor chipped in five and three points, respectively, to help Gilas complete the sweep.
Kazakhstan was led by Timur Tangiyev, who finished with six points and eight rebounds. Mansur Seilkhanov added four points, while Artur Junussov and Alizhan Ydyryszhan contributed three and two points, respectively.
Kazakhstan dropped to 1-2 in pool play following the defeat.
Gilas Pilipinas Men now shifts its focus to the quarterfinals as it continues its campaign in the Asian Games 3×3 basketball tournament.
