GAB suspends batch trainings for pro teams

With NCR-plus coming under Enhanced Community Quarantine from March 29 to Easter Sunday, the Games and Amusements Board has issued a memo to all professional teams to suspend their batch trainings.

Affected areas include Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal.

“In view of the alarming spikes in the number of COVID-19 cases, the conduct of professional sports training shall remain limited to solo or individual activities conducted indoors or anywhere within the individual’s private property beginning March 29 until April 4,” read the agency’s statement.

“Meanwhile, professional sports competitions and group trainings in areas under Enhanced Community Quarantine shall not be allowed.”

Pro teams from the Philippine Basketball Association and Premier Volleyball League have been training in batches in their respective GAB and LGU-approved facilities.

Ginebra and Phoenix have been training in Upper Deck Gym; Meralco holds court in its compound; while San Miguel practices in Acropolis — all of which are in Pasig.

Rain or Shine (Reyes Gym), Alaska (Gatorade Hoops), Creamline, Choco Mucho, and Perlas (Ronac Shaw) are the teams training in Mandaluyong.

TNT (Moro Lorenzo Gym), NLEX (UP Epsilon Chi), Northport (Green Meadows), Blackwater (Aero), Magnolia, BaliPure (RIM Sports), and UAC (SGS) have their camps in Quezon City

Terrafirma has the gym of Azure Urban and Resort Residences in Taguig as home base.

Petro Gazz has the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

PLDT trains in San Sebastian College gym and Cignal at Paco Arena, both in Manila.

Sta. Lucia is the only pro team training in Rizal, doing so at the penthouse building of East Grand Mall. Guest team Army is set to train at its wellness center in Taguig. Both the Lady Realtors and the Troopers are waiting for GAB’s approval.

Currently, the PBA and the PVL have yet to announce the new start dates of their respective 2021 seasons. The PBA plans to have its games at Ynares Center in Antipolo via a closed-circuit system while the PVL will mount its bubble in Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.

The PFL has already called off its Copa Paulino Alcantara tournament.

The NBL and WNBL have postponed the opener of its inaugural pro season.
