Gab Cometa leaves San Beda, heads to Benilde

Another Red Lion has left the den.

Gab Cometa has left San Beda University, according to Red Lions head coach Yuri Escueta.

Cometa left the school a week after the 2023 AsiaBasket International Championship last month.

The 5-foot-9 guard out of Cebu was not in San Beda’s lineup in either the Filoil Ecooil Preseason Cup, or the Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup.

“Hindi ko alam kung anong school siya mag transfer, pero nagpaalam siya sa amin. Pero di ko alam kung CSB or UST,” said Escueta after San Beda’s 87-96 loss to Saint Benilde in the 2023 Filoil Ecooil Preseason Cup.

“Di naman namin siya pinigilan, di naman kami nangpipigil eh, but binigyan namin ‘yung options niya. Sabi namin pag isipan niya mabuti.”

Escueta disclosed that Cometa cited ‘financial problems’ as his reason for moving out of San Beda.

“More of financial ang reason niya for his family, so naiintindihan naman namin,” added the incoming second-year Red Lions head coach.

During NCAA Season 98, Cometa averaged 4.63 points, 2.32 rebounds, 2.32 assists, 0.47 steals, and 0.05 blocks per game.

Cometa previously played for University of the Visayas in 2019 before transferring to San Beda.

He still has two years of eligibility left in his ledger.

Cometa is set to join Justine Sanchez and Tony Ynot at College of Saint Benilde.

All three will be eligible for NCAA Season 100.
