Right in the thick of the UAAP Season 80 Volleyball Tournaments, the University of the East volleyball has been dragged into a major hole as both men’s and women’s volleyball squads have lost their head coaches according to reports.
Former Red Warriors head coach Sammy Acaylar cited his new role as University of Perpetual Help DALTA’s athletic director as his reason for stepping down. This comes a day after Acaylar led the Altas to their 11th NCAA title, beating the Arellano Chiefs in a classic three-game clash.
“Nag-commit kasi ako sa position sa UE before ako gawing athletic director sa Perpetual,” said the proud Cagayan De Oro native.
“Kilala niyo naman ako, kapag ako humawak ng team, gusto ko hands-on ako. Ang problema, absent ako lagi sa mga practices namin. I felt it was unfair,” he continued, adding that he has no qualms with UE athletic director Rod Roque who offered him the job.
As for the Lady Warriors, Francis Vicente ends his catastrophic near four-year stay with the Recto-based program.
Vicente, reportedly, also rendered his resignation earlier this week. Taking over in Season 77, Vicente finishes his career with the Lady Warriors with a 2-45 record.
Coincidentally, both Acaylar and Vicente were the head coaches of the men’s and women’s National Team, respectively, in 2017. They also leave Season 80 with identical 0-5 records.
UE athletics director Rod Roque will serve as the head coach of both teams this weekend.
