Fran Yu’s elbow to Mark Sangco marks end to collegiate run


Colegio de San Juan de Letran will not have its ace guard for the rest of Game Two of the NCAA Season 98 Seniors Basketball Finals.

Fran Yu was hit with a disqualifying foul after elbowing Mark Sangco in an off-ball play with 5:29 left in the second quarter of the game.

After a Robi Nayve miss, Louie Sangalang grabbed the rebound but Sangco was called for an over-the-back foul.

As Sangco was moving back, he got hit in the face by a Yu elbow.

Yu, the NCAA Season 95 Finals MVP, tallied seven points on 1-of-9 shooting with five rebounds, five assists, and a steal during Game One last December 4.

Due to the nature of the foul, Yu will also be meted a one-game suspension if ever Benilde extends the series to a Game Three. If an appeal by Letran is not made nor granted, this would mean that the Tondo-bred guard has played his final game in the collegiate level.

Letran entered the game already shorthanded as two roleplayers were also suspended.

Kyle Tolentino was assessed an unsportsmanlike foul after not giving Miguel Ocozon a landing spot early in Game One. There was no foul called initially and was only meted a punishment after a thorough review after the game.

Kobe Monje was also suspended for an unsportsmanlike foul after hitting Macoy Marcos during the third quarter of the same game.
