Filoil: Torres nails dagger as FEU earns second win at San Beda’s expense


Far Eastern University survived a comeback scare from San Beda University, taking an 82-73 victory, in Group B of the 15th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup, Wednesday in San Juan City.

The Tamaraws got their second win in as many losses to get the fourth seed in Group B, while the Red Lions remained winless in two games as they dropped down to seventh place.

With the lead as big as 11, 69-58, San Beda weaved a 9-0 run, led by JP Bahio to cut the deficit to two, 67-69, with 5:32 remaining in the final frame.

Bryan Sajonia and Yukien Andrada exchanged three-pointers, before Royce Alforque dropped five unanswered points.

Xyrus Torres put up a dagger three to bring the lead back to nine, 82-73, with 36.4 ticks left in the game.

“This win is gonna give us confidence. Again, with what we’re trying to do, kailangan namin ‘tong mga panalong ito especially sa well-coached team like San Beda,” said FEU head coach Olsen Racela, who is the cousin of San Beda head coach Yuri Escueta.

Bryan Sajonia had a game-high 16 markers together with four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Royce Alforque had a well-rounded performance as well with 15 points, six boards, and five dimes. Xyrus Torres added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

For San Beda, Yukien Andrada led the scoring with 15. He also added six boards. JB Bahio and Justine Sanchez both scored 14 with the former having seven rebounds and an assist, while the latter had two boards and a dime.

The Tamaraws (2-2) will face the Knights (1-0) on August 7 at 5:00 PM. San Beda (0-2) on the other hand, will be playing the same opponent on August 14 at 7:00 PM.
