Lyceum of the Philippines University blasted San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the final quarter to take a 74-64 win in Group B of the 2022 Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup, Monday in San Juan City.
The Pirates elevated their record to 5-1 to clinch a quarterfinal berth and stayed in second just behind De La Salle University.
The Golden Stags, meanwhile, fell off to their third loss, 2-3, in the group.
Tied at 58 at the start of the fourth frame, Mclaude Guadaña, Maverick Venoya, Shawn Umali, and John Barba joined forces for an 11-4 run to get a 69-62 advantage. Guadaña then converted a booming triple to get a 10-point cushion, 72-62, with 1:37 left.
“Sa ‘min ang focus kasi namin talaga is to learn, keep on learning win or lose. Ang focus talaga ng team na to is to prepare sa season namin and tinitignan naming kung sino yung kaya mag-perform and sino ang ready mag-perform and ‘yun, ‘yun lang talaga tinitignan naming every game,” said Lyceum assistant coach Patrick Melencio.
Renzo Navarro supplied 13 points, three rebounds, and four assists for the Pirates. Venoya added 12 markers, six boards, and four dimes, while Umali flirted a double-double with nine markers, nine boards, and two assists.
The Pirates will look to take another win against San Beda University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Milo Janao paced the Golden Stags with 18 markers, five boards, and two steals, while Vince Suico chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Arvin Paglinawan topped the boards for San Sebastian with nine along with seven points
Meanwhile, San Sebastian will look to stop its skid against Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Thursday at 1 p.m.
