Filoil: Monje provides spark as Letran downs JRU to open campaign

Colegio San Juan de Letran used a huge third-quarter surge to down Jose Rizal University, 79-66, in the 2022 FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday in San Juan City.

The Knights outscored the Heavy Bombers by 18 in the third frame, 27-9, to establish a 60-41 lead entering the fourth.

JRU tried to claw back, but nine would be the closest it could get, 71-62, with less than three minutes left.

“Like I say, galing kami sa talo kahapon. We just want to bounce back and get a win,” said Letran head coach Bonnie Tan. The Knights lost to De La Salle University yesterday in the 2022 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup.

Kobe Bryant Monje scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Paolo Javillonar added 11 points and five rebounds.

Fran Yu and Brent Paraiso scored 10 points apiece as well, with the former dishing out four assists while the latter grabbed six rebounds.

Three Heavy Bombers produced double digits in Agem Miranda, Ry Dela Rosa, and Jason Celis who all got 14 points in the losing effort.

John Amores did not play in the game.

Letran will face Far Eastern University on Sunday, August 7 at 5:00 PM. Meanwhile, JRU will take on Lyceum next on Sunday, July 31.
