Filoil: La Salle weathers Gozum outing, sends CSB home

De La Salle University sent sister school College of Saint Benilde home, 83-74, in the quarterfinals 15th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Tuesday in San Juan City.

After the win against CSB, now all NCAA teams are eliminated from the tournament.

Kevin Quiambao showed his full arsenal as he finished with 18 points, five rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and a steal.

“Kevin here gave us a big lift there when we needed him. He kept us in the game. Hopefully, we can continue that in the next round,” said La Salle head coach Derrick Pumaren.

After Miguel Oczon cut the deficit to three, 67-70 with 8:03 remaining, no other Blazer was able to score in the last eight minutes of the quarter besides Will Gozum.

“I told them that Benilde is gonna come out strong. If we’re not able to match their intensity, their energy from the start, and we give them the confidence, they can steal the game from us,” he continued.

La Salle’s defense proved to be working as only Gozum and Miguel Corteza were able to breach the double-digit scoring for CSB.

Mike Phillips provided additional scoring for the Green Archers with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Evan Nelle added four makers, eight boards, and seven assists.

Gozum’s monster performance went for naught after finishing 26 points on 52-percent shooting, 10 rebounds, and two steals. Corteza also had 14 markers and seven boards.

La Salle will wait for the result of the University of the Philippines-Far Eastern University match to determine their semifinal opponent.
