Filoil: Diouf returns as UP romps UE to go 3-0


University of the Philippines stayed undefeated in Group A of the 2022 FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup after conquering University of the East, 86-63, on Wednesday afternoon in San Juan City.

The Fighting Maroons utilized a 27-10 second period to turn a 20-13 close affair into a 47-23 blowout at the half.

The Fighting Maroons advantage ballooned to as much as 29, 52-23., on a Malick Diouf’s free throw at the 8:02 mark of the third frame.

“Maganda naman ‘yung nakukuha naming exposure… sabi ko nga ito ‘yung wala sa amin last season,” said UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde on the preseason tournaments they’ve joined. “Malaking tulong ito para sa amin to prepare for the coming season.”

Diouf played his first game in the tournament, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in just 19:40 of action.

Carl Tamayo led the Fighting Maroons anew with 20 points and four rebounds, while Bismarck Lina added 12 points and three rebound.

UP hiked its record to 3-0 while the Red Warriors sank 0-2.

Meanwhile, Abdul Sawat paced the Red Warriors with 14 points and three rebounds while Calvin Payawal finished with 10 points on 3-of-6 clip from the field.

UP will next face Emilio Aguinaldo College on Wednesday, 1 p.m., at the same San Juan venue. UE will first take on Arellano University earlier in the day at 11 a.m.
