FIBA 3×3: Gilas Women bow to mighty China to open Asia Cup run

Gilas Pilipinas Women could not match the firepower of world no. 5 China, absorbing a 10-19 rout to open Pool A competition in the 2023 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup, Saturday at the Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Square.

The Philippines will face Iran at 6:15 PM in a do-or-die affair.

China, parading a new-look squad composed of Zhang Lingge, Zhang Yi, Zhang Jianping, and Chen Yujie, was just too overpowering for the Filipinas.

Going cold from deep, China pounded Gilas in the point, going 11-of-20 from the inside.

Strong was the start for China, racing to an 8-3 lead before pushing it to 16-6.

Zhang Lingge was unstoppable for China, finishing with 10 points on two deuces with five rebounds.

Zhang Yi and Chen grabbed eight rebounds apiece with the former also chipping in four markers.

Afril Bernardino led Gilas with four points while Clare Castro added three markers and seven boards.

Gilas Women missed all their seven attempts from two-point country.

The Scores:

Philippines 10 – Bernardino 4, Castro 3, Pontejos 2, Castillo 1.

China 19 – Zhang L. 10, Zhang Y. 4, Zhang J. 3, Chen 2.
