Defending champion Far Eastern University edged De La Salle University, 1-0, in a tense preview of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Football Final, held on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Field.

The decisive moment came in the 57th minute when a miscue from Chenny Dañoso led to an own goal, handing the Lady Tamaraws the lead.

With the win, FEU extended its lead atop the standings to 19 points, five points ahead of the Lady Booters, with a +14 goal difference.

“This game was not a good game,” admitted FEU head coach Let Dimzon. “I think na-pre-pressure sila kasi they are thinking about playing against La Salle for the finals.

“Ayun ‘yung nagiging problem namin – they cannot handle the pressure. Then also, hindi ko nakita ‘yung play namin, ‘yung system namin.

“A little frustration on my part, but I told them they have to enjoy the game as it’s just a non-bearing game,” she admitted as she immediately huddled up the troops after the game.

FEU showed early intent when Marinelle Cristobal attempted a free kick in the 23rd minute, only for La Salle goalkeeper Jessica Pido to clear the ball swiftly.

Meanwhile, La Salle had its moments, with defender Maye Mendaño taking a free kick in the first half that sailed over the goal.

She came close again in the 81st minute, forcing a crucial save from Lady Tamaraws goalkeeper Jessa Lehayan.
