San Beda University has played four games in the Filoil EcoOil 15th Preseason Cup, but its sophomore wingman Rhayann Amsali has yet to play for the squad.
Red Lions head coach Yuri Escueta bared after their resounding win against NCAA rivals Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Sunday that Amsali is still recovering from COVID-19, but is now well.
Nonetheless, Amsali is yet to join their training and practices.
The youthful mentor said, “Nag-beg off siya kasi na-late siya dumating kasi nagka-COVID siya. So, na-late siya ng one month ng practice.
“So medyo na-delay nga yung habol niya sa practices, so baka hindi siya makahabol and focused na lang rin siya sa academics niya.”
During his rookie season, the 6-foot-4 native of Zamboanga City averaged 5.08 points and 3.25 rebounds in 12 games played under then-head coach Boyet Fernandez.
Escueta also clarified that the management and the former Batang Gilas member are on good terms, and the latter updates the team on his situation.
“We’re in constant communication naman. Basta sabi ko when he’s ready, he can come back,” Escueta shared. “Wala namang bad blood with the team and the family. All is well. We’re in good communication naman.
“Ang importante sa ‘min ngayon, okay siya eh. Kasi ayaw din naman biglain, kasi nahirapan siya don sa COVID niya.”
