Erika Santos provides unlikely spark for La Salle vs FEU

De La Salle University had to dig deep to avoid a second consecutive loss in opening the second round of the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament against Far Eastern University, Saturday night.

And they found the perfect sparkplug in the form of Erika Santos. She provided the much-needed energy in the first round that saw the Lady Spikers crawl back from a seven-point, 13-20 disadvantage to take set one.

After the quality minutes that she put up as a substitute, Santos received the opportunity to start in the next two sets. She ended up with nine points to spark La Salle’s 25-23, 25-13, 25-14 victory over FEU.

According to Santos, she was able to analyze the complexion of the game from the bench – explaining her immediate contributions as soon as she came onto the court.

“Siguro po yung hugot, coming from the bench po nakita po namin yung galaw ng team and nag-o-observe po kami kung ano yung kulang. So ayun,” said Santos after the game.

“Parang ready lang po anytime na puwedeng tawagin para mafulfill kung ano yung kailangan ng team,” the sophomore opposite spiker added.

Santos’ steady performance did not go unnoticed, though. La Salle assistant coach Benson Bocboc praised her for the spark that she brought, especially in the opening frame.

“Si Erika naman, yung energy niya talaga, it’s very positive kapag nasa loob. Ang isang inaasahan natin sa kaniya is definitely the attack, which is nakita naman natin kanina. So ayun, as expected, nag-deliver naman si Erika.
