Toyama’s excellent January campaign continued on Saturday, routing Hiroshima 82-68 in the 2021-22 B.League season, Saturday at Toyama City Gymnasium.
The Grouses went up to 12-19 with the win, taking their fourth win in their last seven games.
It was Toyama’s second quarter defense that paved the way for the win.
Holding a three-point lead after the opening frame, the Grouses held the Dragonflies down to just 13 points during that span. Toyama meanwhile shot 9-of-14 from the field to put up a 47-32 lead at the half.
Toyama would not lose grip of its lead, gaining a lead that went to as high as 23 points, 77-54, early in the final frame.
Bryce Johnson powered the Grouses to victory with 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting with 12 rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.
Joshua Smith got 13 points and seven rebounds as well while Julian Mavunga chipped in 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
Dwight Ramos had an off-shooting night, going just 2-of-7 from the field for seven points. The Filipino-American winger still went a plus-15 during the 19 minutes he spent on the floor.
Hiroshima, who fell to 18-12, was led by naturalized Japanese Thomas Kennedy with 11 points. Nick Mayo, Charles Jackson, and Naoto Tsuji all had 10 points each as well.
The two teams square off against each other tomorrow.
