SANTA ROSA – Hobbled by a nagging knee injury since the start of the conference, Choco Mucho setter Deanna Wong feels great after making her first start for the Flying Titans against Capital1 on Saturday night.
“Masaya na nakapaglaro na pero unti-unti pa rin. It’s more of the system talaga that we follow kaya kahit sino naman ipasok, nagagawa pa rin namin ‘yung kailangang gawin,” said Wong.
Wong missed two games and played off the bench in the rest before making her first appearance in the starting lineup in their 25-15, 25-16, 25-21 victory over the Solar Spikers in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex here.
She only played in the first two sets but managed to finish with nine excellent sets and two points to help Choco Mucho win their seventh game in eight outings.
“Siguro po, it starts sa training naman lalo na sina Coach (Dante Alinsunurin) at saka ‘yung teammates ko, nandyan naman sila. It’s more of how we help each other kasi and how we bring up each other, and dahil naman sa kanila ‘yun,” she added.
Sophomore setter Mars Alba did an impressive job filling in for the injured Wong, helping the team achieve a 6-1 start in the conference before the win over the Solar Spikers upgraded their card to 7-1.
It is still uncertain if Wong will play the same amount of minutes in their future games, but it seems that the 25-year-old playmaker out of Ateneo is trending towards the right direction.
“Siyempre alam naman nila coach kung pano ‘yung gagawin during game or kung anuman pong strategy na ginagawa,” said Wong.
“Lagi namang sinasabi nila coach na health-wise talaga ‘yung mas mahalaga.”
