UP coasts through Adamson in men’s badminton tourney, keep playoff hopes alive


Men’s Singles 1: Ethan Joshua Malelang(UP) def. Jerome Pechera(AdU)

UP 1-0

UP’s Malelang and Adamson’s Pechera traded points early in the first set. However, Malelang would suddenly rally after a sudden tilt and pull away from his opponent to take a 21-17 victory. Pechera would put up another tough challenge to take a 15-12 early lead, but a fired up Malelang would score nine points to Pechera’s one in the following minutes to bag the game and give UP the early lead in match points.

Men’s singles 2: Edwin John Villoria(AdU) def. Wilson Joseph Lopez(UP)

UP 1-1 AdU

Adamson’s Villoria would take advantage of a sudden seven point barrage to leave opponent Lopez in the dust, 21-12, to win the first set. Lopez would bounce back in the second set, leading by as much as 10-2, but would lose steam in the next few minutes. Villoria would force Lopez to errors while managing to bag points from his attacks, eventually overtaking his opponent 21-19 and giving Adamson its first match win of the day.

Aggregate score: Villoria- 42, Lopez- 31

Total match time: 37 mins.

 

Men’s Doubles 1: Joaquin Raphael Deato and Carl Kristian Clemente(UP) def. Edwin John Villoria and Keith Reyes(AdU)

UP 2-1 AdU

The UP duo sailed past their opponents from Adamson, 21-13 in the first set, with four of UP’s last five points awarded to Deato. Adamson’s Reyes and Villoria would put a stronger fight in the second game, but UP would soon find a way to wear out their opponents, taking the 21-18 win after dismantling a sudden Adamson rally.

Aggregate score: Deato and Clemente- 45, Villoria and Reyes- 31

Men’s Doubles 2: Reden Cuden and Ethan Joshua Malelang(UP) def. Jerome Pechera and Johnric Macabenta(AdU)

AdU 3- 1 UP

The duo of Cuden and Malelang were off to a hot start, sailing past their opponents 21013 in the first game. Macabenta and Pechera opened the second set to take the early 9-8 lead. However, Malelang would go on a six point rally to overtake their opponents. A worn Adamson squad would eventually be unable to answer back, as the UP shuttlers claimed their third match point and seal the day’s victory for UP.

Aggregate score: Cuden and Malelang-42, Pechera and Macabenta- 28

Total match time: 31 mins.

 

Men’s Singles 3: Lorenzo Miguel Leonardo(UP) def. Johnric Macabenta(AdU)

UP  4-1 AdU

The first set of the final match between the shuttlers from Diliman and the shuttlers from San Marcelino opened to a fiery exchange of swats. Though Macabenta would gain an 18-15 lead, momentum would tilt for his opponent, as Leonardo would outscore Macabenta six points to one in the next few minutes to take the 21-19 victory for the set. The second game was a different story however, as an unstoppable Leonardo piled on the points after a series of rallies to close out the match, 21-9.

Aggregate score: Leonardo- 42, Macabenta- 28

Total match time: 28
