Coach Meneses not content with five-set loss to Lady Eagles, but happy the Lady Falcons played well

The Adamson Lady Falcons are on a four-game losing streak, tumbling down the standings to a 3-6 record. Their last loss came at the hands of the Ateneo Lady Eagles in a classic five-set match. Adamson had a chance in the 5th set, holding a slim 9-8 lead before Ateneo took control of the game. We caught up with Adamson coach Sherwin Meneses, who shared with us his insights about the game.

Forcing the defending champions to play five sets might seem like an accomplishment to many, especially since Adamson has struggled for the past few games. But for Coach Meneses, his team is in no position to take moral victories.

“Hindi eh. Kasi wala kami sa position na good game lang mangyari. Kasi under kami sa standings. Sayang, yun lang masasabi ko. Sayang. Sabi ko nga eh, last push na eh. Pero nakadagdag dun sa low morale yung three straight.”

Adamson’s next game is against UE, a team that has yet to win a game all season. Despite this, Coach says they will not take the team lightly, citing the team’s need for urgency if they still want to make it into the Final Four.

“Kahit sino naman pwede kami talunin eh. Kami din, pwede tumalo kahit sino. So mag prepare kami ng maganda, kasi wala kami sa time na maging kampante, kahit sino kalaban pwede kami talunin. So mag prepare kami ng double time.”

While Coach Meneses is not happy with the loss, he hopes that the team goes into their next games with high morale.

“Isa lang masasabi ko, siguro sana para sa kanila ma high morale sila sa remaining games namin, kasi wala kami sa position na mag five sets lang. Talo pa rin.”

After the loss, he told the Lady Falcons that there is a difference between being content and being happy. He said the team can be happy because they played well, but the team cannot afford to be content with the five-set loss.

“Iba naman yung masaya sa kuntento. Kung kuntento ka na sa four sets, di ka na tataas. Kailangan manalo. Iba naman yung masaya kasi maganda yung performance. Pero iba pa rin yung kuntento sa masaya eh. Iba yung panalo.”

The Adamson Lady Falcons have been known for playing good defense in the past. The team has struggled lately in that aspect, but the AdU coach says that they are working on that part of their game.

“Hindi naman kada-taon ganyan yung team eh. Winowork namin, may program naman dun about sa defense eh. Pero hindi siya ganun kadali.”

Despite the loss, Coach Meneses still believes in his girls and their chances of making it into the Final Four.

“Sabi ko sa kanila may last push pa tayo. Hangga’t may pag-asa kailangan i-grab natin. Kaso wala tayo dun sa position na maging kampante. So work muna namin yung UE after lahat.”
