Record breakers gonna break records.
The National University Lady Bulldogs, owners of the longest winning streak in UAAP history across all sports, just made history once again.
In their first win in the league’s 85th season and their 97th straight, NU pummeled University of the East by 84, 131-47, on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
That scoring output was good enough for most points in a single game in the league’s women’s basketball history since the computerization of stats.
The record was previously held by University of Santo Tomas with 129, during its 87-point romp against University of the Philippines back on September 22, 2018.
And the record-breaker was Christiana Dimaunahan’s corner triple to beat the buzzer.
But don’t be fooled, the mighty Lady Bulldogs did not purposely reach that mark. They were not even aware that they made history until they were told.
“Wow,” reacted NU head coach Aris Dimaunahan, players Camille Clarin and Angel Surada upon knowing their new record.
“Wala kaming idea about the score, the history. We just play this game,” said Dimaunahan, who had his NU head coaching debut.
“Sabi ko nga we’re not aware of the scores, we are talagang looking at playing this game the right way. Kung dapat mong ipasa, ipasa mo. Kung dapat mo itira, itira mo.”
Yes, they were awed by what they did, but again, NU’s focus is only on playing the game of basketball the right way.
That’s the only way they know how, which has built them a castle of 97 straight wins – and counting.
“We just told the girls not to look at the score but focus on how we play the game,” shared Dimaunahan. “Yun ang focus namin, we don’t look at the score basta ang focus namin is how we play this game rightfully.”
“Even before, we don’t focus on the number, we focus on the game at hand,” added Clarin.
“We’ve always been lucky enough to have that focus in each game and the results will show.”
